Erhürman: "Without a Solution, Peace on the Island Will Always Be Under Threat"
Tufan Erhürman, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), has stressed the urgency of a sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, warning that failure to achieve this would result in a constant threat to peace on the island.
Speaking on Kanal Sim's Meyil Adakul program, Erhürman highlighted the geopolitical shifts in the region and noted that diplomacy on the Cyprus issue is ongoing.
"2025 will be a pivotal year for the Cyprus issue," he stated. "Peace and a solution are essential for sustainability. Recent developments have shown that the current positions are not viable. Without a solution, we will continue to live on an island where peace is perpetually under threat."
Criticism of Government Inaction
Erhürman criticized the current administration, stating that it has "even lost the claim of being a government." He accused the government of failing to address pressing issues, from earthquake preparedness to economic crises, and described the approach to governance as lacking vision and planning.
Earthquake Preparedness Neglected
Highlighting the island's location in an earthquake zone, Erhürman expressed concern over the lack of preparedness. "Despite warnings from the Chamber of Geological Engineers, no expert studies or concrete measures have been undertaken," he said. "The public is deeply concerned, yet the government remains silent."
Economic Mismanagement
Erhürman also criticized the government's economic policies, stating that the economy is "not being managed." He cited the rising cost of living and inadequate responses to inflation, particularly in the electricity sector, which he said has led to further price hikes. He noted a decline in crossings from the south to the north, attributing it to the economic shift toward the south.
Issues in Agriculture and Border Crossings
Turning to agricultural policy, Erhürman pointed out the inefficiencies caused by poor planning and the lack of reliable population data. "This country used to export potatoes," he remarked, "but now we can't even determine how much to produce, and we're importing potatoes." He also addressed the congestion at the Metehan crossing point, suggesting that opening additional points could alleviate the problem.
Call for Early Elections
Erhürman emphasized the need for early elections, arguing that the current government is incapable of addressing the public's concerns. "Without changing this mindset, progress is impossible," he said. "An early election is inevitable; only the date remains undecided."
Reiterating the importance of resolving the Cyprus issue, Erhürman concluded, "A solution is not just desirable—it is essential for peace and sustainability on this island."
