Bashar al-Assad and Family in Moscow: Russia Grants Asylum
Former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow after Russia offered them asylum, Russian news agency TASS reported. The asylum was reportedly granted on "humanitarian grounds," according to a Kremlin source cited in the report.
TASS stated that Russian authorities are also in communication with representatives of the Syrian opposition regarding the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic missions in Syria.
Assad’s whereabouts had been unknown since opposition forces entered Damascus. The Russian Foreign Ministry previously confirmed that Assad had stepped down as a result of negotiations, which Russia did not participate in, and subsequently left Syria.
Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jallali acknowledged losing contact with Assad and Defense Minister Ali Mahmoud Abbas late last night. Meanwhile, two senior officials from the Syrian military told Reuters that Assad had departed Damascus by plane.
Assad was last seen during a meeting with Iran’s foreign minister.
Speculation Over UAE Asylum
Earlier, there were unconfirmed reports that Assad had sought asylum in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, UAE Presidential Adviser Anwar Gargash dismissed such claims, stating he was unaware of Assad’s presence in the UAE and refused to comment on whether Assad had sought asylum.
Gargash described Assad’s situation as a "footnote in history," emphasizing the larger challenges Syria continues to face, including vulnerability to extremism and terrorism.
