Ataoğlu Urges Turkish Tourists to Visit Northern Cyprus
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu has called on Turkish citizens to prioritize visiting Northern Cyprus over other destinations, emphasizing the strong ties between the two nations. "As brotherly countries, let us support each other and choose Northern Cyprus instead of other places," he said.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ataoğlu noted that Turkey’s population of 85 million includes 13 million who travel abroad each year. Despite Northern Cyprus being just a short flight away, he highlighted that it has not received the attention it deserves and stated that efforts are underway to increase interest from Turkey.
Tourism Recovery and Growth
Ataoğlu described 2024 as a positive year for Northern Cyprus tourism, overcoming challenges posed by the pandemic. "The tourism sector faced significant difficulties during the pandemic, but we worked hard to restore pre-pandemic performance. Our tourism figures are now exceeding those levels, and we are optimistic about next year," he said.
He pointed to the opening of new hotels and the expansion of airline services as key indicators of growth in the tourism sector.
"Choose Northern Cyprus Over Other Destinations"
Ataoğlu also emphasized collaborations with organizations such as the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB) to encourage Turkish citizens to visit Northern Cyprus. He highlighted initiatives like the introduction of new airlines and ferry services aimed at increasing accessibility.
"We discussed how to revive tourism with TÜRSAB. It is crucial for our brothers and sisters in Turkey to visit Northern Cyprus, share in its beauty, and strengthen the bond between us," Ataoğlu remarked.
Urging Turkish citizens to support Northern Cyprus, he concluded, "Instead of traveling to other islands or countries, let us choose our own island—Northern Cyprus, which shares the same language, religion, and currency."
