In a post on X, Letymbiotis said the amendment to the US defence budget, which gave the National Guard the right to participate in US multilateral exercises with eastern European countries until 2027, indicated the stability and institutional upgrading of bilateral relations between Cyprus and the US.

“The amendment was a milestone of strategic importance and a decisive step, highlighting the increased geopolitical and military weight the US place on the Republic of Cyprus,” he said.

Cyprus has become “the only state outside Nato and its Partnership for Peace to be included in this list of countries”, Letymbiotis said.

This development, he added, “is incorporated in the broader framework of expanding and deepening the strategic cooperation between Cyprus and the US, which is now being strengthened on a legislative level as well.”

The amendment in the final text of NDAA Act 2025, with 281 votes in favour and 140 against, bore witness to the upgraded bilateral relations.

With the imminent approval of the bill by the Senate and its signing by the US president, the National Guard will have the right to participate in multilateral military exercised up until 2027, Letymbiotis added.
He also said the decision pointed to the recognition on behalf of the US of Cyprus’ strategic role in the eastern Mediterranean.

The gradual strengthening of bilateral relations, through the strategic dialogue and tangible initiatives, highlights Cyprus as a pillar of stability and cooperation in the broader region, the spokesman said.
