Erhan Arıklı: "Minibus Drivers Have Turned Roads Into Race Tracks"
Speaking to Kıbrıs Postası, Minister Erhan Arıklı highlighted the growing incidents among minibus drivers in Kyrenia, stating, "Minibus drivers have practically turned the roads into race tracks, competing over who gets on the road first and who picks up more passengers. This situation significantly disrupts traffic."
Arıklı emphasized that the Traffic Department and police are unable to respond immediately to such incidents. He announced plans to collaborate with Kyrenia Municipality to address the problem, saying, "We will authorize the municipality to resolve this issue. After the budget is approved, we will bring the matter to the Council of Ministers. Necessary regulations in urban transportation will prevent these chaotic situations."
"Severe Penalties for Rule-Breaking Drivers"
The new regulations will clearly define bus stops, departure intervals, and traffic rules. Arıklı warned that drivers failing to comply will face penalties, including license revocations if necessary. "We can no longer remain spectators to this reckless behavior," he added.
The statement comes after a November 26 incident in which a dispute between two minibus drivers on the Lapta-Kyrenia route resulted in injuries. Both drivers were hospitalized.
