Özersay: "Country’s Entry and Exit Control Unmanageable"
Kudret Özersay, leader of the People’s Party (HP), stated that the control over the country’s entry and exit has become unmanageable, warning that without more decisive actions against money laundering and organized crime, the country will face serious issues. He emphasized that, "Soon, it will be too late to address mafia and organized crime."
Özersay shared a written response from the police to HP regarding allegations of large sums of foreign currency being smuggled into the country through Famagusta Port. He pointed out that the lack of transparency in this case only increased suspicions.
According to the police response, on November 22, 2024, a tip-off led to a search at Famagusta Port, but no illegal activity was found. On November 23, 2024, all vehicles arriving from abroad were scanned by an X-ray machine, and again, no unlawful activity was detected.
Özersay criticized the police’s silence during this process and stressed, "If effective measures are not taken against the country’s ports and in the fight against money laundering, our country will suffer severe consequences."
