EU Highlights Cyprus Issue for Turkey's Membership Progress
European Union (EU) ministers responsible for European affairs met in Brussels for their final session of the year. In the concluding statement of the EU General Affairs Council meeting, it was emphasized that the EU attaches great importance to the resumption of Cyprus solution talks and progress in these negotiations as part of enhancing cooperation with Turkey.
The statement under the "enlargement" section of the meeting's final communiqué included references to Turkey, an EU candidate country. It highlighted the strategic interest in promoting a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean and underscored the importance of a cooperative relationship with Turkey in this regard.
The report noted that Turkey's constructive engagement would be crucial in advancing various areas of cooperation. "In this context, the EU places special importance on the resumption of Cyprus solution talks and progress in these negotiations as part of further developing cooperation with Turkey," the statement read.
The EU reaffirmed its full support for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue under the United Nations (UN) framework. It further emphasized the significance of Turkey's commitment to and active contribution toward such a peaceful solution, including its external dimensions.
The statement also welcomed the recent steps taken by the UN Secretary-General to restart solution talks and reiterated the EU's readiness to play an active role using all available tools to support every stage of the UN-led process.
