Akansoy: We Must Return to the UN Framework in Cyprus Issue
CTP (Republican Turkish Party) Secretary-General Asım Akansoy emphasized the need to return to the UN framework in addressing the Cyprus issue, stating that the current situation is not sustainable.
Speaking during the debates on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' budget at the General Assembly of the Republic's Parliament, Akansoy stressed that the Cyprus problem is a matter that impacts every aspect of life.
He noted that the Cyprus issue is not only a subject of foreign policy but a comprehensive and decisive matter. "It is a topic that cannot be viewed merely as a foreign policy element," Akansoy said.
Highlighting the changing global dynamics, Akansoy remarked, "A new world is being established. There is a serious blockage in the international arena," noting that regional and global issues remain unresolved, with the balance of power shifting towards regional forces, where the powerful resort to violence.
Akansoy also discussed the ongoing developments in foreign policy, emphasizing the importance of Cyprus not only as a geopolitical but also a geo-economic entity. He pointed out that regional wars are not trivial matters.
"What position should we take as Turkish Cypriots in this fire? How will we ensure our security, prosperity, peace, and survival on these lands?" he questioned, underlining that Turkish Cypriots have been engaged in a struggle for existence since the 1950s.
Commenting on the actions taken in the TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) over the past four years, Akansoy suggested that there is a need to evaluate the progress made during this period.
He further emphasized that uncertainty has no place in decisions about the future of the community. "We need to develop a common discourse. With this separatist approach, we have no chance of establishing any standing in the international arena," he stated.
Akansoy concluded by reiterating that the current situation is not sustainable and that a return to the UN framework is necessary. He also stressed the importance of the Republic’s Parliament being actively involved in the Cyprus issue.
