Özersay: Greek Cypriot Leadership Repeating Same Mistake
Kudret Özersay, leader of the People’s Party, described the violation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) airspace by French fighter jets as a "provocation." He emphasized that Turkey should raise the issue with France within the framework of NATO.
Speaking on the "Gündem Özel" program, Özersay commented on the violation by French jets and the Greek Cypriot administration's ongoing armament efforts.
He stressed that this violation was a serious provocation and criticized the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its delayed response to the issue.
On the increasing armament of the Greek Cypriot leadership, Özersay stated, "The Greek Cypriot leadership is taking on a role beyond its capacity, but it should remember that soon it will realize that this jacket is too big for them and will face disappointment. Turkey’s role and importance in the region are growing, and the Greek Cypriot side actually sees this. Everyone must make realistic assessments and stop dreaming. Stability in this region does not come from armament but from cooperation in areas like energy, economy, trade, and ports."
Özersay criticized the government's delayed response to the airspace violation, stating that it raised questions and caused an erosion of credibility while claiming sovereignty over the region.
He said, "An immediate response should have been given to such a clear violation of airspace. There has been no explanation as to why there was a three-day delay. This creates a perception of weakness in terms of our rights and stance under international law."
Özersay urged Turkey to raise the issue with France within the NATO framework, stating, "France cannot ignore NATO member Turkey. This violation must be brought up in NATO meetings."
He also pointed out that the Greek Cypriot leadership was relying on the United States and referred to historical mistakes, noting, "Similar overreaches occurred during the Makarios era, and the result was disaster. The Greek Cypriot leadership is repeating the same mistake today."
