Three Officials Injured in Buffer Zone Incident
Three members of the Anti-Poaching Unit were injured on Monday night following an altercation between the unit’s officers and three vehicles in the UN buffer zone.
The officers were carrying out a motorised patrol in the Potamia area when they observed the vehicles crossing into the restricted zone.
The incident unfolded around 8pm when the officers attempted to stop the vehicles. One of the drivers accelerated towards an officer who had exited the police vehicle to intercept the suspects. In response, the officer fired his service weapon at the vehicle’s tyres, but the driver managed to flee towards the buffer zone.
The second vehicle also attempted to escape but was pursued by the officers. A third vehicle ignored orders to stop and accelerated toward an officer, prompting another round of shots aimed at the tyres.
The officer narrowly escaped into the service vehicle, but the suspect’s car collided with the front of the police car.
All three officers were subsequently taken to the Nicosia general hospital for medical examinations and were granted sick leave due to injuries sustained during the incident.
Authorities continue to investigate the events surrounding the attempted interception of the vehicles, with all drivers believed to have fled towards the buffer zone.
