KTAMS Announces Hunger Threshold at 27,567 TL
The Cyprus Turkish Civil Servants Trade Union (KTAMS) has revealed that the hunger threshold for a four-person family in Northern Cyprus stood at 27,567 TL as of December 31, 2024. This figure represents the minimum amount needed for a family to afford a healthy, balanced, and sufficient diet each month, reflecting the rising costs of living in the country.
In its announcement, KTAMS provided a breakdown of the daily and monthly food expenses necessary for individuals in various demographic groups to meet basic nutritional needs. According to the calculations, a healthy diet requires 7,113 TL per month for an adult woman, 7,434.30 TL for an adult man, 7,830 TL for a child aged 15-19, and 5,190 TL for a child aged 4-6. These amounts were determined based on dietary requirements and food price data.
The union also highlighted the alarming inflation rates recorded in 2024, which have significantly impacted household budgets. According to official data from the Statistics Institute, inflation in December 2024 reached 1.10%. The cumulative inflation rate for the last quarter of the year was calculated at 11.12%, while the annual inflation rate soared to 53.29%.
KTAMS emphasized the challenges faced by families due to the substantial rise in the cost of living and called for urgent measures to address economic inequalities and support those struggling to meet basic needs. The union reiterated its commitment to advocating for policies that would improve living conditions and reduce the financial burden on workers and their families.
