Erhürman: "Distorting Historical Facts Is Unacceptable"

Tufan Erhürman, the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), has criticized the distortion of historical facts for political gain in the ongoing debates surrounding the federal solution model for Cyprus.

In a statement posted on his personal social media account, Erhürman stressed that it is unacceptable to twist historical facts to justify a political stance, particularly when discussing the federal model.
Erhürman pointed out that while it is entirely valid to advocate for any solution to the Cyprus issue, including supporting a solution of "no solution," distorting facts to strengthen one’s political argument is wrong. He specifically referred to the claim that the federal solution would lead to the Turkish Cypriots becoming a minority or being assimilated, saying such an argument ignores the fact that this model had been discussed by Turkish Cypriot leaders, in consultation with Turkey, even up until the Crans Montana talks.
In his post, Erhürman referenced a significant historical moment to shed light on the stance of Turkey on the federal solution. He quoted an excerpt from a speech made by then Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit on February 1, 1974, in the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Ecevit had emphasized the importance of a federative system to ensure the equal sovereignty of the Turkish community in Cyprus and to promote peaceful cooperation between the two communities. The speech highlighted the belief that such a solution would strengthen the territorial integrity and independence of Cyprus and serve the long-term interests of all parties involved, including contributing to regional peace.
Erhürman concluded by calling for discussions based on facts, as opposed to misinformation, in the public debate surrounding Cyprus’s future.
