Tatar: "No Negotiations Without Sovereign Equality and Equal International Status"

President Ersin Tatar, ahead of the upcoming Geneva talks, reiterated his stance on sovereign equality and equal international status as prerequisites for any negotiations. Emphasizing that the Turkish Cypriot side will resolutely pursue its new policy with Turkey’s support, Tatar reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Speaking on the Cyprus negotiations and the Geneva meeting, Tatar underscored that the new policy introduced by the Turkish Cypriot side in 2021 is rooted in the principles of "sovereign equality and equal international status." He made it clear that without recognition of these principles, there will be no transition to an official negotiation process.
Tatar highlighted Turkey’s full support for this stance, recalling that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has consistently defended it on international platforms. Stressing that the Turkish Cypriot people have faced decades of isolation and embargoes, he stated that this injustice must be rectified.
The Turkish Cypriot side, Tatar noted, will emphasize in Geneva that two separate entities and authorities exist in Cyprus and must work together for a shared future. While affirming that the Turkish Cypriot side has always been open to dialogue, he declared that a federation-based solution is no longer viable, adding, "The era of policies aimed at pleasing the Greek Cypriot side is over."
Reiterating his commitment to a two-state solution, Tatar emphasized that full coordination with Turkey will continue. He underlined that the Turkish Cypriot delegation will attend the Geneva talks with Turkey’s backing, stating, "Protecting the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people is our top priority."
