President Ersin Tatar made statements upon his arrival at the Intercontinental Hotel before his meeting with UN Secretary-General Guterres, as part of the informal 5+1 Geneva summit.

Tatar emphasized that they maintain a constructive attitude and will continue to do so. He thanked Guterres for dedicating time to Cyprus amidst the busy global agenda.

"We have the opportunity to explain ourselves here," said Tatar, adding that there are many areas of cooperation, ranging from electricity and water to opening new doors, and that they will continue to strive for progress in these areas. He further stated that the two states will maintain a constructive and positive approach toward cooperation.

Following his meeting with the UN Secretary-General, President Tatar had the opportunity to meet with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and the Greek Cypriot delegation.

During the meetings, President Tatar also met with former Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiadis and the Greek Cypriot Attorney General. Tatar raised objections regarding the sanctions imposed on those who are unjustly detained, including Simon Aykut, who was imprisoned simply for making investments.

Tatar told the Greek Cypriot Attorney General that Simon Aykut’s freedom was being restricted, which he argued was a violation of human rights. He stated that the legal process had been excessively prolonged and that an elderly person’s freedom was being unjustly limited. In response to the Attorney General mentioning that the issue was under judicial review, Tatar said that the problem must be resolved and further discussions were necessary.

Former Greek Cypriot leader Anastasiadis remarked, "Once the Cyprus issue is solved, all these problems will be resolved."

In response, Ersin Tatar stated, "The solution process is taking longer, but you should not keep people in prison in a way that further restricts their freedoms. I expect a humanitarian step and initiative from you on this matter."
