Nikos Christodoulides: Guterres said full-fledged negotiations would be difficult

Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides stated that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sees challenges in resuming Cyprus negotiations at this stage but remains cautiously optimistic about potential positive steps.

It was reported that Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, convened the National Council ahead of the Cyprus talks dinner in Geneva.

Fileleftheros newspaper and other newspapers also covered the National Council meetings in Geneva, along with statements from Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letimbiotis.

The newspaper referred to the National Council briefing after the dinner, claiming that President Ersin Tatar remained in a "passive observer" role during the discussion of international and regional issues and did not participate in the debate.

The newspaper also claimed that Tatar had papers ready for reading, which were referred to the current meeting by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

According to the newspaper, based on the National Council briefing, President Nikos Christodoulides informed that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told him that it would be difficult to resume negotiations at this stage.

Christodoulides also stated that Guterres remained cautiously optimistic about taking some positive steps regarding the situation.

In the post-dinner National Council meeting, Christodoulides provided political parties with information about his morning meetings with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Politis newspaper also reported that Christodoulides briefed the National Council about the topics discussed during the dinner.

According to the report, Letimbiotis mentioned in his statement that Christodoulides had also had a phone conversation with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in addition to the European leaders.

The report further stated that European leaders had expressed their support for the UN Secretary-General's efforts to resume the negotiations.

Meanwhile, Haravgi newspaper wrote that there was no new element presented during the morning's National Council meeting, and the parties reiterated their well-known positions.
