Erhan Arıklı: "Those Expecting a Permanent Solution Were Disappointed, But Important Steps Were Taken"

Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı stated that while the Geneva talks did not yield a permanent solution, significant progress was made in areas such as energy and cooperation. "One is greater than zero," he remarked.

In a statement following the Geneva meetings, Arıklı acknowledged that those hoping for a final resolution were left disappointed. However, he highlighted key advancements, particularly in energy, water, and climate change, facilitated under UN mediation.
Arıklı noted that during a meeting at the Presidency last Friday, the Rebirth Party (YDP) had raised these cooperation issues. He pointed out that the energy crisis affects both communities and recalled how a solar energy project backed by the European Union was stalled due to Greek Cypriot permit requirements. Expressing hope that this obstacle would be overcome, Arıklı also suggested that the proposed electricity connection from Turkey via cable could become part of this cooperation framework.
Regarding the agreement to hold another informal meeting in July, Arıklı interpreted this as a sign that UN Secretary-General António Guterres is eager to achieve at least some progress on the Cyprus issue, even if only through small steps.
