Council of Europe to Convene for İmamoğlu

The detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on March 19, 2025, has sparked significant international reaction. The Council of Europe strongly condemned the move, describing it as an action against the will of the people. The Council announced that it would address the issue at the Local and Regional Authorities Congress meeting on March 24.

The spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry described İmamoğlu’s arrest as "a major setback for Turkish democracy" and stated that the matter would be discussed with Berlin’s Turkish partners.
French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christophe Lemoine expressed deep concern over the developments, warning that these detentions could have serious consequences for Turkish democracy.
Emma Sinclair-Webb, Turkey director for Human Rights Watch, condemned the detention of İmamoğlu and other municipal officials, stating that it was part of a "series of politically motivated investigations aimed at suppressing opposition activities." She called for the immediate release of those detained.
