Massive Disruptions Expected to Cyprus-UK Flights Due to Heathrow Fire

“The situation at Heathrow remains fluid, and flight operations will only resume once power is fully restored and the airport is deemed safe for use. We urge passengers to stay updated with their airlines for the latest travel information,” Hermes Airports, which manages Larnaca and Paphos airports, said.

A flight scheduled to arrive in Larnaca at 5.50pm and its corresponding departure at 6.45pm were both cancelled.

The status of the British Airways flight expected to arrive in Larnaca at 12.05am on Saturday, March 22, remains uncertain as authorities assess the airport’s operational capacity.

British Airways, the main airline affected by the disruption, warned of further disruptions.

“This will clearly have a significant impact on our operations and our customers, and we are working as quickly as possible to advise them of their travel options for the next 24 hours and beyond,” British Airways said.

The power outage has affected 145,000 passengers and led to more than 1,000 flight cancellations worldwide.

Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 reported that at least 120 inbound flights had to divert to alternative airports, significantly disrupting air travel across Europe and beyond.

Authorities are working to restore power and bring Heathrow back to full operation. Meanwhile, 70 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade are battling the blaze at the substation, which continues to burn after breaking out late on Thursday night.

Passengers affected by cancellations and delays are urged to contact their airlines for ticket reissues or refunds. Hermes Airports has recommended that travellers stay updated through official announcements for real-time flight information.

With Heathrow Airport remaining shut for the rest of the day, major disruptions to other flights between Cyprus and the UK are expected to continue.

With Heathrow’s reopening timeline still unclear, further cancellations and delays between Larnaca and London are expected.
