PM Üstel Announces Withdrawal of Controversial Headscarf Regulation

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has announced that the regulation allowing children to wear headscarves in schools, commonly referred to as the "headscarf regulation," will be withdrawn.

Speaking in parliament, Üstel stated, “We will withdraw the regulation to ensure the necessary consensus and consult with the relevant parties.”
Üstel emphasized that the decision made by the Council of Ministers was not intended to divide society or create tensions among children. “When we introduced this regulation, our goal was not to cause division or conflict within society. That was never our intention,” he said.
Highlighting the need for mutual respect, Üstel remarked, “Some places must respect the religious beliefs of certain children,” while also cautioning that “religious beliefs and freedoms should not be confused.”
