Dimitriu: Turkey’s EU Process Tied to Cyprus Issue

DISY and Greek Cypriot House of Representatives President Annita Dimitriu has asserted that Turkey’s European accession process and its involvement in European defense policy hinge on resolving the Cyprus issue.

According to a report by Alithia, Dimitriu, speaking at a commemoration event yesterday, described the informal expanded Geneva meeting as “the first positive step taken after a long period of dangerous stagnation in the national cause.” She claimed that the meeting was necessary to “keep the issue alive and create the conditions for the resumption of negotiations toward a just and sustainable solution.”
Dimitriu emphasized the importance of maintaining full coordination with what she called their “closest and most trusted ally,” Greece. “Now is the time for responsibility and seriousness, not for evasion,” she declared.
Taking aim at ELAM, which refused to attend the Geneva meeting, she asked, “If we had rejected the UN Secretary-General’s invitation, where would we stand now? According to the extreme patriots, how would we have defended our homeland?” She also claimed that the European Union had formally affirmed that any solution must remain within the agreed framework and legitimacy.
Stating that “the only path to liberation and reunification of the homeland is national unity among all political forces, not small partisan interests,” Dimitriu argued that “strong diplomatic initiatives must be launched to force Turkey into making a positive contribution to solving the Cyprus issue.”
She reiterated that “Turkey must recognize that its EU accession process and participation in European defense policy depend on the Cyprus issue” and called for collective efforts to reinforce this message. “Let us lay the foundations for the future that Hellenism deserves, because only through unity and a shared vision can we achieve the solution our people deserve,” Dimitriu concluded.
Haravgi reported the story under the headline: “Annita Dimitriu: The First Positive Step Taken in Geneva… ‘Now Is the Time for Responsibility and Seriousness, Not Empty Slogans or Avoiding Responsibility.’”
