Speaking to reporters after attending the parade for Greece’s Independence Day, Christodoulides reflected on the significance of the day, emphasising that the 1821 revolution serves as an inspiration for Cyprus’s ongoing struggle for reunification.

He noted that, much like in 1821, few believed in the success of the Greek revolution at the time, yet it led to the establishment of the Greek state. He drew a parallel to Cyprus, saying that more than half a century after the division of the island, efforts must continue to achieve reunification.

The president also referred to recent developments in Geneva, where a first step was taken toward resuming negotiations on the Cyprus issue. He underscored the importance of leveraging all factors of national strength – economic, diplomatic and social – to further this goal.

Regarding his upcoming trip to Paris, Christodoulides highlighted that Cyprus has been invited to a high-level summit on Ukraine, attended by a limited number of heads of state. He reaffirmed that Cyprus remains actively engaged in international discussions.

Asked whether Turkey would be present at the summit, the president confirmed its participation. He explained that the meeting is a continuation of previous conferences on Ukraine, with Cyprus’ presence reflecting its commitment to European security.

He also noted that the summit would include discussions on EU defence cooperation, an area where Cyprus and France have long advocated for stronger European defense initiatives.

Christodoulides also addressed questions regarding the expected appointment of a UN envoy for Cyprus, urging patience for an official announcement from the UN Secretary-General. He reiterated that a crucial meeting is set for April 2, emphasising that it is not a symbolic engagement but a working meeting aimed at concrete results.

Regarding his forthcoming meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, Christodoulides said that he is “prepared to discuss all agreed topics from the Geneva conference.” He confirmed that one of the key issues on the agenda would be the opening of new crossing points between the two communities, as outlined in the UN framework.

Asked whether recent political developments in Turkey could impact the Cyprus issue, the president acknowledged concerns, particularly at the European level. He confirmed that “discussions on Turkey’s trajectory have already begun among EU officials and will continue at the political level.”

While describing the situation as challenging, he reaffirmed Cyprus’s commitment to its strategic approach, maintaining a clear and structured plan for the country’s future.
