Harmancı: "TDP is Preparing Its Own Program for Presidential Elections"

Speaking on the 'Objektif' program hosted by Erçin Şahmaran on Kıbrıs Postası Web TV, Harmancı addressed key issues, including the Geneva summit and the presidential elections.

"Both Turkish and Greek Cypriot Approaches Have Been Invalidated"

Regarding the Geneva summit, Harmancı criticized the stance taken by President Ersin Tatar, who insisted on recognition of a two-state solution and political equality before engaging in talks. He noted that this approach has been proven ineffective, as informal negotiations have already begun and are set to continue in July. Similarly, he argued that the Greek Cypriot position of only resuming talks from where they left off at Crans-Montana has also been rendered invalid.

However, Harmancı expressed concern that the Geneva outcomes marked a regression from the Ghali Set of Ideas. He emphasized that "one is greater than zero," yet the progress made has barely even amounted to one.

"Comprehensive Negotiations Are Essential for Changing Dynamics"

Harmancı stressed that the most crucial step for changing the dynamics for Turkish Cypriots is to initiate comprehensive settlement negotiations.

He underlined that the current status quo is unsustainable and that Turkish Cypriots remain the primary victims of the ongoing deadlock. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) remains isolated from the international community, and its institutions are deteriorating, he said, adding that reopening the door to comprehensive settlement talks is the only way forward.

"For Turkey, Cyprus Issue Presents a Strategic Opportunity"

Discussing Turkey's geopolitical significance, Harmancı pointed out that regional developments have further increased Turkey’s importance. He emphasized that the Cyprus issue represents a major opportunity for Turkey to integrate into European security frameworks and noted that Ankara has pursued a pragmatic foreign policy approach in this regard.

"TDP Holds the Political Legacy of Akıncı's Presidential Victory"

On the upcoming presidential elections expected in October, Harmancı highlighted that TDP carries the political legacy of Mustafa Akıncı's 2015 presidential victory. He asserted that TDP will naturally have a say in the upcoming elections.

"We Are Writing Our Own Program"

Addressing potential candidacy, Harmancı stated that, like other parties, TDP is preparing its own program. "Naturally, we are writing our own program," he said, adding, "Of course, one of our colleagues will represent this program."

He reaffirmed that the Cyprus issue remains a key priority for TDP and reiterated that a federal solution is the most realistic and viable option.
