In a statement titled "We Express Our Solidarity with Journalists in Turkey", the association expressed deep concern over the challenges journalists encounter in Turkey. It highlighted that the recent detentions of journalists covering protests, demonstrations, and other events were a clear indication that press freedom and democracy were under threat.

The association reaffirmed its support for journalists in Turkey, calling for the removal of all obstacles to press freedom and stating its firm opposition to any interference with media independence.

The full statement from the Turkish Cypriot Journalists’ Association reads as follows:

“As a friendly country and one of Cyprus’ guarantor states, we closely follow the increasing pressure on journalists in Turkey with great concern.

We stand in solidarity with our colleagues who have been detained while fulfilling their journalistic responsibilities and covering recent protests, demonstrations, and developments.

There can be no democracy in a country without press freedom, freedom of thought and expression, and the rule of law. The public’s right to information is a fundamental principle of public interest. Journalists serve the public under difficult conditions, prioritizing this responsibility above all else.

As the Turkish Cypriot Journalists’ Association, we extend our support to the statement issued today by the Turkish Journalists’ Association (TGC), the Turkish Journalists’ Union (TGS), the Turkish Publishers Association (TÜRKYAYBİR), the Turkish Writers’ Union (TYS), and PEN Writers’ Association. We call for the removal of all barriers to press freedom.”
