Tatar: "Greek Cypriot Side Not Acting Constructively, Another Meeting Possible Before April 24"

Speaking at a press conference following the meeting in the buffer zone, Tatar emphasized that while steps were being taken to build trust between the two sides, the Greek Cypriot leadership had not reciprocated these efforts.

Electricity and Renewable Energy Cooperation

Tatar highlighted the potential benefits of electricity generated from solar energy for both sides. He insisted that if electricity was to be supplied to South Cyprus, the Greek Cypriot side should also provide electricity to the North in return. He expressed concerns over the Greek Cypriot proposal to take full control of electricity distribution, arguing that a proportional arrangement was necessary.

Youth Committee

The establishment of a bicommunal youth committee was also discussed, with each side expected to nominate six members by April 15. Tatar also mentioned possible cooperation on mining activities and the need for an environmental committee meeting.

Border Crossings and Transit Passages

Progress on opening new crossings remains stalled. Tatar stated that while proposals were made to open the Akıncılar and Haspolat crossings, the request for a transit passage in Kiraçıköy was deemed unfeasible. He suggested alternative border crossing proposals, emphasizing that improved traffic arrangements would benefit both communities.

Mine Clearance and Security

Tatar stressed the continued danger posed by landmines and called for further cooperation in clearing them. He suggested that military officials from both sides should engage in discussions to expedite the demining process.

Restrictions on Turkish-Born TRNC Citizens

The issue of Turkish-born TRNC citizens facing restrictions when crossing into South Cyprus was also raised, with Tatar underlining the importance of mutual trust in resolving this matter.

Next Meeting Possible Before April 24

Tatar confirmed that another meeting could take place before April 24, reiterating that both sides must take steps that serve the interests of their respective communities. He also revealed that four out of six proposed measures had been accepted, signaling incremental progress in the ongoing dialogue.
