Maviş: We Welcome the Meeting Process Between the Two Leaders

Burak Maviş, the General Secretary of the Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union (KTÖS), expressed positive views regarding the meeting process between President Ersin Tatar and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, held in Geneva and the buffer zone. He stated, "Even the intention to negotiate demonstrates a desire for compromise."

Speaking on the "Agenda with Ulaş Barış" program on Kıbrıs Postası TV, Maviş highlighted that while there were areas that could be criticized, the decision to travel to Geneva was not necessary if only a few doors were to be opened. He emphasized that these decisions could have been made locally.
Maviş stressed the importance of the two leaders being able to negotiate and noted that the presence of negotiation intentions from both sides implied a willingness to seek compromise. Reflecting on the lack of significant negotiation tables since 2017, Maviş recalled that some decisions were made during the Akıncı era, but they were not implemented.
He also pointed out that President Ersin Tatar has an opportunity before him, stating, "If he plans to run for re-election, he needs to show that he has done something concrete in terms of community leadership. Perhaps a full agreement on opening several doors was not achieved. In Geneva, the discussion was about opening four doors, and there was also a proposal for unions and civil society organizations, but this was not accepted."
Maviş further emphasized the need for youth involvement in the process. He described the youth committee as an important starting point, stating, “A mechanism should be created that represents all sections of society. Young people can move this process forward with a new language and solution model. They may find a different path that both communities can accept.”
On the topic of energy, Maviş drew attention to Cyprus's ongoing electricity issues. He explained, “The project is ready, but there is a sovereignty debate. Where will the cable pass? Will it be unilateral, or will it go to both sides? These issues need to be resolved.” He stressed the importance of political will focusing on this matter.
Finally, Maviş stated that the potential return of the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín, to the island would positively affect the process, and emphasized the need for concrete steps toward a solution.
