Speaking on a TV2020 program with Gökçe Örnekal, Taçoy expressed his view that the headscarf issue in schools had been politicized, stating, “Politicizing an issue and dragging society into a debate about it is one of the most harmful things you can do.”

"Yes, This Country Has Freedom of Thought, But No One Can Tell Me 'Go Live in the South'"

Taçoy pointed out that according to the law, individuals are considered children under the age of 18, and he highlighted that the Turkish Cypriot community has embraced a modern version of Islam. He stressed that the Turkish Cypriots have never wavered in their faith in Islam or their love for the flag. He added, “We have never used religion for political purposes in this country, but now there are parties that are stoking this issue.”

He also noted, “Yes, this country has freedom of thought, but no one can tell me ‘Go live in the South.’” He clarified that his intention was not to take sides but to find a solution to the issue.

Taçoy reiterated that the headscarf debate was purely political and had no religious basis. He explained, “The Party Council was called to meet on this matter, but I do not believe that the Party Council is the right place to discuss it. I oppose the politicization of this issue, which could create more tension within society, so I will not attend that meeting.”

"I Am Sure the Party Council Will Make a Decision in Favor of the Headscarf"

Taçoy expressed confidence that the Party Council would reach a decision in favor of the headscarf, noting that the issue was extremely sensitive. He added, "We are at a point where a structure exists that could create political division on the Cyprus issue. I’ve been saying since 2022 that a comprehensive solution plan will be presented. In this plan, everything the Turkish Cypriots have gained so far, including Turkey’s guarantorship, will be diluted. Today, by politicizing the headscarf issue, some are trying to show opposition to Turkey. Let’s not make mistakes upon mistakes. During this period, when we need to strengthen our ties, we should not allow any environment that could divide or complicate our relations to take hold."

He emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with Turkey, stating, "Our concerns about the future are not related to religion. We will not abandon our religion, our language, or our flag. The creation of an opposition stance against Turkey is not something we need. Let’s all escape from this moment of confusion."
