Öztürkler: Tosunoğlu's Resignation to Be Decided in General Assembly

Ziya Öztürkler, in a statement to the Turkish Cypriot News Agency (TAK), said that Hasan Tosunoğlu’s resignation would be evaluated by the Presidential Council, and the final decision would be made in the General Assembly. Independent Member of Parliament Hasan Tosunoğlu submitted his resignation to the Presidency of the Assembly.

In his remarks to TAK, Parliament Speaker Ziya Öztürkler confirmed that Tosunoğlu submitted his resignation letter on Friday, but the final decision regarding the resignation would be made by the Republic of Cyprus Parliament’s General Assembly.
Öztürkler also revealed that the Attorney General’s office submitted the file regarding Tosunoğlu’s parliamentary immunity to the Assembly on Friday.
“FINAL DECISION WILL BE MADE IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY”
Explaining the procedures to be followed, Öztürkler stated that according to Article 132 of the Parliament's Rules of Procedure, the Presidential Council would summon the member to a council meeting to verify the legitimacy of the resignation request.
Emphasizing that the final decision would be made in the General Assembly, Ziya Öztürkler explained that for the resignation to be valid, a simple majority of the MPs attending the General Assembly must vote in favor. He also noted that the vote would be conducted openly.
THE FILE REGARDING TOSUNOĞLU’S IMMUNITY LIFTING IS ALSO WITH THE PARLIAMENT
Öztürkler noted that the Attorney General's office had sent the file related to the lifting of Tosunoğlu’s immunity to the Assembly on Friday, and it had been shared with the MPs as well.
COMMITTEES CALLED FOR MEETINGS
Öztürkler added that the Divan and Advisory Committees had been called for meetings, and he requested political parties to submit the names of members who would serve on the committee formed to examine the request for lifting Tosunoğlu’s parliamentary immunity.
TOSUNOĞLU WAS ELECTED AS A DP NICOLEA MP IN THE 2022 EARLY GENERAL ELECTION
Hasan Tosunoğlu was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Party (DP) in the early general elections held on January 23, 2022, for the Nicosia district. He took the oath of office on February 7, 2022. On November 25, 2024, he resigned from the Democratic Party and became an independent member of parliament.
