Decision on Citizenship Rights of Children from Mixed Marriages to Be Announced Tomorrow

The decision regarding the citizenship rights of children born from mixed marriages, a case that has been ongoing for 10 years, will be announced tomorrow. The ruling will concern Eda Hançer Akkor’s appeal regarding her application for “Republic of Cyprus” citizenship.

Akkor’s case, which ended on February 21, 2025, at the High Court, had not yet received a decision. The case was initiated on the grounds that the citizenship criteria set by the Council of Ministers for the “Republic of Cyprus” are discriminatory and violate both the Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.
Following the ruling, Süleyman Gelener, the Education Secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Union (KTÖS), stated that a press conference will be held in the future with Akkor’s lawyers. He emphasized that one of the most significant social issues created by the Cyprus problem is the denial of citizenship rights to children born from marriages between citizens of the “Republic of Cyprus” and foreign nationals.
The joint statement was signed by nine unions that have supported the case, which include: KTÖS, Kıbrıs Türk Orta Eğitim Öğretmenler Sendikası (KTOEÖS), Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi Akademik Personel Sendikası (DAÜ-SEN), Kıbrıs Türk Amme Memurları Sendikası (KTAMS), Kooperatif Görevlileri Sendikası (KOOP-SEN), Belediye Emekçileri Sendikası (BES), Basın Emekçileri Sendikası (BASIN-SEN), Kıbrıs Türk Devlet Çalışanları Sendikası (Çağ-Sen), and Devrimci İşçi Sendikaları Federasyonu (DEV-İŞ).
