EP Calls for Freezing Turkey's EU Accession Process; 3 Greek Cypriot MEPs Abstain

The European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee approved a report calling for the suspension of Turkey’s EU accession process due to ongoing democratic backsliding and the removal of Istanbul's mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, for political reasons. The report was approved with 48 votes in favor, 3 against, and 23 abstentions.

Three Greek Cypriot Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), Geadis Geadis, Kostas Mavridis, and Yorgos Georgiyu, abstained from voting. The report argues that Turkey’s EU accession should remain frozen due to these issues, with the committee stressing that strategic and geopolitical needs should not undermine democratic principles.
The MEPs also emphasized that any exceptions to these principles could not be justified, underlining the importance of adhering to democracy in the accession process.
In discussions prior to the report, references were made to the need for a UN-backed, bi-communal, two-state federation solution to the Cyprus issue.
