Dizdarlı: "The Important Thing is the Independence of the Courts"

Former Ombudsman Emine Dizdarlı described the groundbreaking ceremony for the new High Court building, which took place yesterday, as a "political show." Dizdarlı stated that the images presented during the ceremony resembled a political demonstration rather than a judicial event.

She emphasized that the ceremony was conducted in a manner inconsistent with the nature of the judiciary, and speculated that the organization of the event was likely arranged by the Turkish Embassy, which made it resemble the opening ceremonies held in Turkey. Dizdarlı clarified that the participation of the Court President at the event did not necessarily mean that they organized it, suggesting that this attendance might have been in response to an invitation.
"The Important Thing is the Independence of the Courts"
Dizdarlı noted that the proximity of the new High Court building to the executive and legislative branches would not necessarily undermine the principle of separation of powers. "What truly matters is the stance of the High Court and the decisions it makes," she stated, emphasizing that the real independence of the courts is measured by the rulings they deliver.
She pointed out that the practices during the ceremony were unusual, particularly the presence of a religious figure and the reading of the Fatiha, which stood out to her. Dizdarlı commented, "A different approach was taken, but I am sure the President of the High Court had limited influence over the organization of the event."
