Decline in Greek Cypriot and Maronite Population in Karpaz and Koruçam

The population of Greek Cypriots and Maronites living in Northern Cyprus has been steadily decreasing. In an effort to encourage repopulation, Greek Cypriot authorities are implementing initiatives related to education, transportation, and social support. It has been reported that there are 60 Greek Cypriots in Karpaz and 293 Maronites in Koruçam.

According to the newspaper Haravgi, "Kormakiti (Koruçam) and Dipkarpaz’s 'Mahsurlar' Keep Their Hopes Alive," the number of Greek Cypriots in Dipkarpaz and Maronites in Koruçam has remained stable. Based on statements by Anna Aristotelus, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Issues of the Greek Cypriot Presidency, the number of Maronites resettling in the north is 293, while the number of Greek Cypriots in Karpaz stands at 60.
Aristotelus also noted that among these individuals, there are 110 children and 16 infants.
Yiannakis Musas, the Representative of the Maronites in the Greek Cypriot Parliament, also commented, stating that 45 Maronites in Koruçam and 5 in Karpaşa never left their villages. Musas further mentioned that the resettled Maronite population in Koruçam is 250, while in Karpaşa, it is 20.
Musas pointed out one of the significant challenges faced by the Maronites: delays at the crossing points for workers coming from Southern Cyprus. He highlighted that one individual spends an inordinate amount of time traveling to and crossing through the Metehan Border Gate.
On the other hand, Fileleftheros newspaper reported that Anna Aristotelus also unveiled plans to encourage Maronites to stay in their villages and resettle. The first measure will focus on education, with plans to reopen the primary and nursery schools initially. Scholarships for students will also be available, and progress is being made in the acquisition of two buses to transport both students and the elderly.
Additionally, Aristotelus mentioned that food packages would be sent to all families during Easter and Christmas holidays.
