In his speech at a ceremony commemorating Kostas Mişaulis and Derviş Kavazoğlu, Stefanu reiterated that the solution was not a dream but an achievable option, one that begins with their efforts.
According to Haravgi newspaper, Stefanu emphasized that AKEL, together with thousands of progressive citizens—Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Latins, and Armenians—would continue their joint struggle for peace and reunification within the framework of political equality, a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.
Stefanu also addressed the ongoing efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, noting the Turkish side’s insistence on a two-state solution and stressing the importance of the Greek Cypriot side being clear about the agreed-upon basis for a solution.
He emphasized the need for the negotiations on the Cyprus issue to resume from where they left off in Crans-Montana in 2017. Stefanu suggested that there should also be readiness to address the outstanding issues in the framework set by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
In his speech, Stefanu further argued that both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot nationalisms speak the same language of fear, hatred, and conflict, despite having different colors and ethnic backgrounds.
He commented on the slogans of Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot nationalism, “Cyprus is Turkish,” and “Cyprus is Greek,” stating that Cyprus belongs to its own people, to both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.
