Man Discovered to Have Overstayed 1,263 Days After Voluntarily Visiting Police Station

Rugee Quemou Watkıng, who was arrested in the TRNC for residing without a permit, has been brought before court once again.

Police officer Duran Dal presented the facts during the hearing, stating that Watkıng voluntarily went to the Gönyeli Police Station on 11 April 2025. A subsequent immigration check revealed that he had been residing illegally in the TRNC since 26 October 2021, a total of 1,263 days. He was arrested the same day for being caught in the act of violating immigration laws.
The police noted that the suspect verbally stated he wished to return to his home country. Watkıng was brought before the Nicosia District Court on 11 April, where an additional three-day detention order was granted.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities seeking to determine what the suspect was doing during his extended illegal stay. Deportation procedures are reportedly underway. The police emphasized that if released, the suspect is likely to reoffend, and therefore requested his continued detention.
After evaluating the testimony, Judge Nuray Necdet ordered that Watkıng remain in custody for an additional three days.
