Tatar Slams Greek Cypriot Leaders Over “Hate Speech” and “Divisive Rhetoric”

TRNC President Ersin Tatar strongly condemned recent remarks made by Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Archbishop Georgios of the Greek Orthodox Church, accusing them of promoting hate speech and undermining prospects for dialogue on the island.

Tatar criticised Christodoulides' statement about a strategy to “tear down the wall of occupation,” calling it an unacceptable attempt to mask past crimes and hegemonic ambitions. He also rebuked Archbishop Georgios’ Easter message for using discriminatory and inflammatory language, including terms like “cruel Turks” and calls for their expulsion.
“These statements damage the foundations of mutual understanding and dialogue,” Tatar said, warning that no solution is possible unless it is based on sovereign equality and equal international status.
Calling on the international community to take note of what he described as “aggressive and exclusionary rhetoric,” Tatar emphasised that the Turkish Cypriot people will not compromise on their sovereignty, dignity, or the legitimacy of their state.
