Both Sides Await Appointment of UN Envoy

Both sides in Cyprus are reportedly awaiting the appointment of a personal envoy by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

According to Haravgi, Guterres has made a decision on who will take on the role, though it remains unclear whether Maria Angela Holguín will be reappointed.
The paper noted that Holguín is still considering the possibility of accepting the mission, but this information has not yet been confirmed. It added that since both sides’ positions are already well known, there would be no need for exploratory meetings.
Meanwhile, both sides are also looking ahead to the upcoming leaders’ meeting scheduled for May 5, where discussions are expected to continue on Confidence-Building Measures, particularly the opening of additional crossing points.
According to the report, official sources told the newspaper that it will be difficult to reach consensus on either the envoy appointment or the crossing points issue.
Negotiators are expected to hold at least one more meeting before the leaders’ summit. Additionally, the bi-communal Youth Committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting in early May.
