Arson Attacks in Derinya Buffer Zone Spark Fires on Both Sides

A series of arson attacks in the Derinya buffer zone on the evening of Monday, 21 April 2025, led to multiple fires, prompting emergency responses from both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot fire services.

The first incident occurred around 8:50 p.m. when one or more individuals entered the area from the Greek Cypriot side in a vehicle and set fire to shrubland. The flames quickly spread and reached the Turkish Cypriot side of the buffer zone. Firefighters from both the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus acted swiftly to contain the blaze.
A second wave of arson was reported around 10:10 p.m., with fires ignited at three different locations within the same buffer zone area. Again, coordinated firefighting efforts from both sides successfully extinguished the flames.
