Erdoğan Slams Headscarf Controversy in TRNC: “Necessary Message Will Be Given”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has reacted sharply to reports that a student in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was targeted for wearing a headscarf. Erdoğan stated that the issue is being closely monitored and vowed, “I will deliver the necessary message to the impertinent.”

According to a report by Türkiye newspaper's Yücel Kayaoğlu, Erdoğan condemned the incident involving a headscarf-wearing female student in the TRNC. “I heard about the disrespect shown to a veiled girl in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. I will give the necessary message regarding this issue, God willing,” he said.
Reminding the public that the right to wear the headscarf was achieved in Turkey after many years of struggle, Erdoğan emphasized that the same sensitivity must be preserved in the TRNC. “The headscarf is a matter of faith and a fundamental right for us,” he said, stressing that any form of discrimination in this context will be firmly opposed.
He also called on the relevant institutions and authorities in the TRNC to issue statements and take appropriate action as soon as possible, noting that the matter would be closely followed.
According to sources present at a recent meeting, Erdoğan described the incident as “impertinence” and announced plans to visit the TRNC in the coming days, during which he said, “We will deliver the necessary messages there.”
Erdoğan’s remarks clearly outlined Turkey’s stance on the ongoing headscarf debate and sparked widespread reaction both in Turkey and the TRNC. The public continues to await further details and official responses related to the incident.
