Istanbul Shaken by 6.2-Magnitude Earthquake

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Istanbul’s Silivri district on Wednesday, rattling the city and nearby provinces, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported. Earlier, a smaller quake, measured at 3.9 by AFAD and 4.0 by the Kandilli Observatory, was also felt in the region.

The stronger quake, occurring at a depth of 6.92 kilometers, caused widespread concern in Istanbul, with tremors felt in surrounding areas. No immediate reports of damage or casualties were available.
The initial tremor, centered in the Marmara Sea near Silivri, struck earlier in the day, registering as a minor event. AFAD reported its magnitude as 3.9, while Kandilli Observatory slightly upgraded it to 4.0, reflecting minor discrepancies common in seismic measurements.
The subsequent 6.2-magnitude earthquake, also off Silivri, heightened anxiety in Istanbul, a city long braced for seismic activity due to its proximity to major fault lines. AFAD’s swift announcement confirmed the quake’s intensity and shallow depth, amplifying its impact across the region.
Authorities are monitoring the situation, with AFAD and local officials assessing potential damage. Istanbul, home to over 15 million people, remains on high alert for aftershocks, given its history of devastating earthquakes.
