No Reported Damages from 6.2 Magnitude Istanbul Earthquake

The Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya noted regarding the 6.2 magnitude earthquake: “A 6.2 magnitude earthquake was centred in the Sea of Marmara, off the coast of Silivri. The earthquake was felt in surrounding provinces, and AFAD and all teams from our relevant agencies have begun on-site investigations”.

Earlier, a 3.9 magnitude tremor had occurred in the same location, followed by two more significant seismic activities measuring 4.4 and 4.9 on the Richter scale.
According to the website of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake was centred in the Sea of Marmara, off the coast of Silivri in Istanbul, at a depth of 6.99 kilometres.
This area is part of what scientists call a “seismic gap”. It is one of the locations where the so-called “Istanbul earthquake” could potentially occur, according to studies conducted on major seismic activity in the region.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that he is closely monitoring developments and wished the Turkish people a “speedy recovery”.
