The tremor, which struck at a depth of 7 kilometers, was felt across several parts of the city, including Büyükçekmece. Authorities confirmed there were no fatalities or major damage from the initial quake or the aftershocks.

Despite the lack of physical destruction, fear of further tremors prompted many Istanbul residents to spend the night outside. Parks in the Fatih district became makeshift shelters, where citizens set up tents or laid down mattresses to sleep under the open sky. Others chose to sleep in their cars.

Some Istanbul mosques, including the historic Şehzade Mosque in Fatih, remained open overnight at the instruction of the Istanbul Governor’s Office, providing shelter and warmth to concerned residents.

On April 23, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan convened an emergency meeting at AFAD's Istanbul Disaster Directorate. Joining him were several high-ranking officials, including Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, Environment and Urbanization Minister Murat Kurum, Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu, Youth and Sports Minister Osman Aşkın Bak, and Istanbul Governor Davut Gül.

In a statement shared via social media, Erdoğan reassured the public, saying, “Citizens can rest assured. As the state, we are in full alert 24/7 and will continue working tirelessly for our nation.”

Erdoğan reported that search and assessment operations revealed no serious issues in the affected regions, and emphasized that the government had already taken steps to mitigate further risks. “Thanks to God, we have not suffered any loss of life,” he added.
