20 Lives Lost in First Four Months of 2025

Traffic accidents continue to be a major concern across the country, with 20 people losing their lives in the first four months of 2025.

According to Mehmet Zeki Avcı, President of the Association for the Prevention of Traffic Accidents, if this trend continues, the total number of fatalities could surpass last year’s toll of 50.
Avcı noted that while traffic fines were recently increased, penalties alone are not enough to reduce accidents. He emphasized the need for effective enforcement, public awareness, and stronger legal regulations. He also criticized the fact that speed cameras have not issued any fines in the past two years, and that the official traffic rulebook remains incomplete and inadequately distributed.
Avcı highlighted gaps in driver licensing practices, including the unchecked issuance of licenses to foreigners without proper exams. He stressed the importance of comprehensive reform, warning that if the current pace continues, traffic fatalities could exceed 50 by the end of the year.
