UAE to Supply S Cyprus with Mobile Desalination Units amid Water Crisis

Cyprus has secured immediate water assistance from the United Arab Emirates through the provision of mobile desalination units to address its severe water shortage, President Nikos Christodoulides revealed in an interview with ANT1 television to be broadcast on Thursday evening.

The aid package will meet Cyprus’s water needs for the remainder of 2025 until the implementation of previously announced measures scheduled for 2026, according to the president.
The UAE will provide 15 mobile desalination units, each capable of producing up to 1,100 cubic metres of water daily, enough to cover the island’s current daily shortfall of 15,000 cubic metres, ANT1 reported, citing sources familiar with the agreement.
Despite already announced emergency and long-term measures, Cyprus faces potential water cuts during the summer months as current reserves and existing desalination capacity cannot meet demand.
Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou and officials from the Water Development Department recently visited the UAE to inspect the units and confirmed they can be immediately connected to Cyprus’s water supply system, while Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos finalised the agreement during his visit to Abu Dhabi.
No mobile desalination units were available on the international market to meet Cyprus’ urgent needs, making the UAE’s assistance “truly lifesaving,” according to ANT1’s sources.
