Erhürman: Political Equality Is Essential for a Just Solution

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman emphasized that children and youth are paying a heavy price for the lack of equal opportunities on the international stage and underlined that a solution can only be achieved on the basis of political equality.

Erhürman made his remarks regarding the recent opening of a new UEFA representative office in Istanbul, established through the efforts of the Turkish Football Federation. Following the ceremony, which was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Erhürman expressed hope that this development would be beneficial for the Republic of Turkey.
Highlighting the presence of Cyprus Football Association (KOP) President Yiorgos Koumas at the opening, Erhürman drew attention to the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in politics, sports, and science. However, he pointed out the continuing problem of the Turkish Cypriots not receiving the respect they deserve on the international stage, despite being one of the two equal founding communities of Cyprus.
“As long as current conditions persist, there must be respect for the statuses of both the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Based on past experiences, we know that all forms of international relations will continue to face challenges,” said Erhürman.
He stressed that children and young people have been bearing the brunt of the lack of equal opportunities internationally, and insisted that political equality is the only viable path to a solution.
“Our goal must be to change the current conditions as soon as possible and resolve the issue without further delay,” he continued. “For generations, our children have been paying the price for being cut off from the world in sports and many other areas. We are losing generations here. We are experiencing the pain of seeing our globally talented youth lose the opportunity to fulfil their potential.”
“We are one of the two equal founding communities on this island, with equal rights to those of the Greek Cypriot people. We are fully aware that the only way to obtain the rights derived from our equality is through a solution that guarantees our political equality, and until that solution is reached, it is vital to demonstrate the will for a solution,” Erhürman said.
He concluded by reaffirming the Turkish Cypriot people’s unwavering commitment to their rights and to a solution, and expressed a willingness to engage sincerely with anyone who genuinely supports peace.
