Maviş: Two-State Policy Isolates and Ignores the Will of Turkish Cypriots

Burak Maviş, Secretary General of the Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union (KTÖS), has criticised the two-state solution policy, arguing that it isolates the Turkish Cypriot community and disregards its collective will.

In a statement issued by KTÖS, Maviş said the deepening discourse around a two-state solution has further disconnected the Turkish Cypriot community from the rest of the world and rendered it invisible in the context of international law.

"The isolation caused by this policy is not limited to diplomacy—it extends to economic, social, and cultural spheres as well," the statement read.

Maviş pointed out that, during this period, relations between the Republic of Cyprus and Turkish states have strengthened, with new embassies opened, increased diplomatic engagement, and expanding cooperation. "Turkish Cypriots, however, have been excluded from these developments, turned into a community living in isolation within its own island," he said.

He warned that such political directions undermine Turkish Cypriots’ aspirations for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution based on political equality and jeopardise their rights as EU citizens. “We are being pushed into a closed-off structure—unrecognised and disconnected from the outside world,” Maviş stated.

He also criticised the fact that Turkish Cypriots are being left out of joint sports and cultural events held between Turkey and the Republic of Cyprus, even though these activities continue smoothly.

KTÖS reaffirmed its support for a federal solution to the Cyprus problem in line with United Nations parameters. “We demand the protection and advancement of our individual and collective rights as European Union citizens,” the statement said. “We want to take part in the solution process as a community with its own identity, committed to a peaceful and democratic future.”
