Ersin Tatar: I Wish the TRNC Could Be Renamed the Turkish Republic of Cyprus

President Ersin Tatar has expressed his desire for the name of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to be changed to the “Turkish Republic of Cyprus,” lamenting that the Constitution does not permit such a change.

In remarks to researcher and writer Hilmi Daşdemir, President Tatar addressed public calls following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit, which renewed expectations regarding a possible name change.
“I wish it were possible. I share that view,” said Tatar, adding that in the event of a two-state solution on the island, there would no longer be a need for a north-south distinction. “Had there been a federation, it would have consisted of a northern state and a southern state. That is not the case now,” he stated.
Tatar emphasized that the Constitution currently prevents any change to the TRNC’s official name, which he acknowledged as a problem.
