Cemil Önal Shot Dead in the Netherlands

Cemil Önal, a key financial associate of slain Turkish Cypriot gambling tycoon Halil Falyalı, was shot and killed in a targeted attack at Hotel Hoevevoorde in Leidschendam, Netherlands. The assassination occurred around 5:45 p.m. on May 1, during a busy hour at the hotel, and is believed to have been meticulously planned, according to eyewitnesse

Cemil Önal was widely known as one of the central figures managing Falyalı's financial affairs. Following Halil Falyalı’s assassination, Önal became a suspect in the investigation and fled abroad. He was apprehended in the Netherlands in December 2023.
Despite Turkey's request for extradition, Dutch authorities did not transfer Önal and instead launched local judicial proceedings. He was later released after reportedly providing a 120-page statement to Dutch and U.S. intelligence agencies.
His killing marks a dramatic escalation in the shadowy network surrounding Falyalı’s operations, which have been tied to organized crime, money laundering, and international investigations. Dutch authorities have launched a full investigation into the murder.
