A German member of the European Parliament has voiced strong support for efforts to reunify Cyprus, urging the international community to closely watch developments affecting Turkish Cypriots.

Kai Tegethoff, an MEP for Volt Europa, made the remarks after observing recent protests in northern Cyprus. In a statement released by the party, Tegethoff said he had witnessed “Turkey’s attempt to encroach on the political will of the Turkish Cypriots”.

He described Ankara’s interference as “an attempt to limit the voice and rights of Turkish Cypriots”, warning that it posed a serious threat to democracy and local self-determination.

Tegethoff called on the international community to pay close attention to the developments. He stressed the need for external actors to respect the island’s sovereignty and the rights of all communities.

“Cyprus deserves a common European future, based on mutual respect, democracy and equality,” he said.

The MEP also reaffirmed his party’s commitment to Volt Cyprus and its members across the island.

“Volt Europa stands in practice next to the Volt of Cyprus, to the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots,” the statement read.

He voiced strong backing for initiatives that promote cooperation, independence, and reunification of the divided island.
