Erhürman: "Government Missteps Undermine Turkish Cypriot Position on Cyprus Problem"

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman has warned that the Turkish Cypriot side’s longstanding arguments on the Cyprus problem are losing credibility due to poor governance and political inaction.

Speaking on Sabah Postası on Kıbrıs Postası TV, Erhürman said the failure of the current administration is eroding the Turkish Cypriot community’s international standing and weakening its hand in the Cyprus negotiations.
“While for years it was clear that the Greek Cypriot side was obstructing a solution, today the situation has reversed,” said Erhürman. “There are now cracks even in the positions that once clearly justified the Turkish Cypriot stance. The leadership’s indifference is putting our credibility at risk.”
He emphasized that the Greek Cypriot side has turned the property issue into a legal weapon, and warned that similar tactics could soon be used in the fields of higher education and tourism. “What we are seeing is the price of a ‘no-solution is the solution’ mentality. We said these things would happen—no one needed to be a scholar to see it coming,” he added.
“Every Day This Government Stays in Power Is a Day Stolen from the Country’s Future”
Erhürman strongly criticized the current government, stating that no aspect of governance is functioning and the problems are piling up. “Each day this government remains in power is a day stolen from the country’s future,” he said, pointing to worsening conditions in health, education, the economy, and foreign policy.
He argued that change is urgent and inevitable. “The streets are already saying it. The government is in a state of collapse, and the only way forward is political change.”
Headscarf Controversy Reflects Deeper Governance Failures
Commenting on the recent controversy surrounding a student wearing a headscarf in a public school, Erhürman said the situation was mishandled from the start. “If this student had been placed in the Hala Sultan Theology College from the beginning, none of these issues would have arisen,” he said.
He criticized the sudden amendment to the disciplinary regulation allowing headscarves, calling it poorly planned and implemented. “A regulation change during the middle of the school year, made overnight, is unacceptable—especially in education,” he said.
Erhürman concluded by underlining the broader consequence of governance failures: “If people are expected to protect themselves, then what is the point of having a government? The state exists to safeguard its people—and that trust has been broken.”
