Hahn is expected to visit Cyprus in the near future to begin contacts with both sides.

In a statement, the European Commission emphasized its commitment to the reunification of Cyprus, stating that Hahn will report directly to von der Leyen and will work closely with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar. His role will focus on contributing to a comprehensive and sustainable settlement in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and EU principles, values, and legislation.

The statement underlined that Hahn’s mission includes engaging with all relevant stakeholders and counterparts to help rebuild trust and prepare the ground for the resumption of negotiations.

Hahn previously served three consecutive terms as a European Commissioner, overseeing Regional Policy (2010–2014), European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations (2014–2019), and Budget and Administration (2019–2024). Prior to his work at the EU level, he served as Austria’s Minister for Science and Research from 2007 to 2010 and was a member of Vienna’s regional government for four years.
