Contracts of Civil Servant Leasing TC Lands to Himself and Family Annulled

A report by the Audit Office in South Cyprus has revealed that since 2014, a civil servant and his family had been leasing a total of 1,825,000 square metres of Turkish Cypriot land from the state at unusually low rates. Despite the situation being known since 2014, no substantial action was taken until recently.

According to Politis, the only step taken during that time was to reduce the amount of land leased. In 2015, the civil servant's leased agricultural land was reduced from 1,825,447 square metres to 884,622 square metres, with a symbolic annual rent of €40. In 2020, he signed a new lease agreement for 861,485 square metres at an annual rent of just €484.
Following complaints lodged by then-Interior Minister Nikos Nouris, criminal proceedings were initiated against the civil servant. In October 2024, based on instructions from the Legal Department regarding how Turkish Cypriot properties were allocated to close relatives, Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou annulled all lease agreements made by the official — including one for the Turkish Cypriot house he had been occupying since 1985.
